How to Get Recruited By College Track & Field Coaches
Latif Thomas interviews Ron Grigg (University of Jacksonville Director of Cross Country / Track & Field) on a range of topics related to how the pandemic has affected the college recruiting process with a focus on the specific actions HS coaches, parents, and athletes can take in order to increase and improve their opportunities to get recruited.
In this recording, Coach Grigg dispels many common misconceptions about how to get recruited in track and field, particularly those surrounding the popular myth that your actual meet performances (times / heights / distances) are enough information to provide sufficient information about an athlete’s ability and potential, particularly when each athlete is competing with countless other prospects with similar personal bests.

Outrageous. Do not trust this guy with his info made me come 2nd last in my race. I will not be coming back to this information
I like this drill
Tomorrow I’m running a 400m, wish me luck!
I can't believe this video was made 9 years ago I stumbled on it I run 400mh But im running 400m flat and im gonna apply this method Thanks coach
I am litterly watching this 30 minutes before my race
what is like to do is say to my self "i can do all things with Jesus Christ who strenghtens me"
Thank you so much for this
50 meter sprint at the start is not enough ,First 100 is at 90 % , "Float " 75 %, next 100 , start to accelerate at the 200/250 mark , last 100, Arms ,Arms and heart ❗
How do you adjust for hurdlers?
I ran a 4x4 at my first meet with no plan. Died out at the last 100 and ended with a 68. Here's to progressing to sub 60 lol (If I'm ever put on the 400 or 4x4 again)
It's my first year in track as a middle schooler 7th grade and my 400 m time went from a 1:27 down to a 1:23 because of this thank you so much.
I was so confused until I realized this was an indoor track
I'm going to try this, my current time for 400m is 1:12 (no hate, still in middle school). I'll edit this when I've made progress (currently trying to shave down my time to 1:10 or so). :) edit: I ran a 1:08 at divisionals!
I wouldn't listen to this guy. F=ma. acceleration or deceleration takes Force (energy) don't waste energy speeding up or slowing down. Except of course you will have to accelerate in the beginning, accelerate slowly to save energy. Try to maintain your speed rest of the way. This feels like gradually building intensity over the race as your body gets tired and you have to work harder not to slow down. If you find yourself slowing down in the last 100m you went too fast. If you find yourself able to speed up in the last 100m you went too slow. Best of luck! With enough training you can get under the minute mark! Maybe even 50s if you're very dedicated.
@@tann_man thanks for the advice!
@@tann_manwow here goes those keyboard coaches You wouldn't listen to a 400m veteran and a decade old coach But we should listen to you who spends all day eating potato chips and commenting on yt videos 🤦🏾♂️
@@tann_manplus your advice is so plain and bs What does F= ma even change in context to what the coach said It's basically the same thing every middle grader knows Secondly you definitely attack the first 50- 100m of the 400m race All world class athletes do that You didn't even break down the other parts you just repeated what he said 🤦🏾♂️ Which kind of clown is this
@@djungelskogL0v3rdon't listen to that narcissist
Legends are watching now , A day before race 😢
Lots of space between the legs when the toe hits the ground. Shouldn’t they be nearly even to optimize ground contact time? Also head down too much? Leg angles in the block? 🤔
I used the same strategy in a race before I watched this video and got second with a huge PR this man is not lying
My coact doesn't understand that a consistent schedule even in college is necessary having days i focus sprints/ hurdles not the same day i focus on jumps.
Do you have a video where it shows what a perfect takeoff looks like ans broke down?
anybody watching this before a meet
600mts
Miss you coach 😂
Rest in peace Latif Thomas 🕊️
You are very very good at explaining techniques. Thank you.
So do the runner start at the first tape or further back?
My best time is 1 min 39 seconds. I need to improve this asap
Thank you, this is the most helpful video for the 400 meter that I have seen. I’m pretty fit but my 400 meter time is slow, I didn’t have a plan so that is probably partly why, I’m going to try this as soon as possible, I hope it helps
bro nice coachin i litteraly love ur talk bro i love ur tips....nice experiences bro keep it up
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
what about a boy run 54seconds in 15years old, i want to know whether i have talent
I’m pretty sure that good because for the boys 400 the average is 59 seconds
Hold on I might be tripping
I was today years old when I found out the dude in the video passed away 😔😔
Ron Grigg is an abusive, body shaming asshole! He's a monster!
Trough-to-peak 6% and previous-peak-to-peak 2%. Is this what is being said?
Thanks for the advice
I respect The Master 100m presentation material very much and it provides a great insight into the sprinting training, however, I'm not sure that performing the lifts on the same day as sprinting is really beneficial. You argue that performing it the other day makes the athlete fatigued, however, I don't get how it doesn't make them fatigued and sick when performing on the same day!? The athlete must perform poorly in the strength gym sessions after the athlete is already exhausted after the sprint training (or vica-versa, which is even worse order). If the strength is done the other day, at least he has one night to recover from the sprinting.
"Race Plan"? 😐 Definitely not from my HS Coach🙄
I have 400m race tommorow 🙏🙏
Ok. So where the 300 meters actually start from
For the very 1st time , I am selected for the 400m race for college sport , its gonna be next week , don't have that much experience, but i hope this will help me a lot i guess, wish me luck guys , I'm trying to do my best 🏃♂️
What happened? How did you finish it?
I MISS YOU COACH !
This was really helpful but it was also hilarious half the time 😂 I’ve got a 400m race tomorrow and I am stressed. 😢
Visually i look at a track and i see that each marked lane is slightly larger & longer then the 1 before it. Is this a true visual assessment or do I need to go back to school. With that said , wouldn't being on the inside line be an advantage
Cues regular runnjng speed isolating one leg. Cue recover the heel step over the knee. Drive the foot into the ground so it goes under the hills
Who is seeing this video in 2023

Your start line is in the wrong place on the track. The start line is at the opposite corner.
Thank you
i allways sprint last 100
Less talking get right to the point
we need your urgent advice, my son is competing asian athletics championship, he was supposed to run 200 meters, but for some reason they by mistake listed him as 400 meters, he have one day to decide if he is gonna run or just drop that. can you give us a quick advice can 200 meter sprinter do decent result in 400 ?
what did he do
Interesting to watch but does me no good now. Last time I ran a 400m...or should I say a 440yd back then was in 1977 - H.S.
